This alfresco restaurant is part of Sandy Beach Resort (the term resort is very loosely applied, as the place is more motel than hotel).

Grilled seafood with a view!

D’Grill has indoor dining, but when by the sea, one would be silly not to take advantage of the alfresco dining area which looks out on Cenang beach. The menu is wide and varied, with a jumble of local and Western food. While everything is actually quite decent – chicken satay is RM12 for a set of ten sticks, cucumber, onion, ketupat (rice cake) and peanut sauce; chicken soup (RM10) comes with two large pieces of garlic bread, and hot plate black pepper squid is RM20 with coleslaw, a bun and fries – the lure is the fresh seafood.

Even if the grill isn’t going yet, the kitchen can rustle up hot plate seafood items

Beginning from around 4pm, patrons can check out the selection of fish on ice, and pick what they want. Prices are based on weight.

Fire it up, big guy!

The grilled squid was RM24 and gorgeous, with a deep, briny taste like sea salt in chocolate, with a great texture. The greenlip mussels were RM6 per 100 gram, and came out nice and tender, with a little char on the sides, which added crunch.

After eating them fresh, you won’t want to touch frozen greenlip mussels again

The bawal (pomfret) was the priciest of our selections at RM35, but it was worth it, as the flesh came out tender, sweet, and flaky.

Fishy business is the way to go in Langkawi
